WILLIAM F. CLIFFORD.
One of the public spirited citizens of Napa, who withholds his cooperation from no movement which is intended to
promote public improvement or the best interests of his fellowmen, is William F. Clifford, the proprietor of the
Napanee Produce Company, who has attained a high place among the representative men of his locality
Mr. Clifford was born in Denver, Colorado, on the 23d of November, 1887, and is a son of Thomas J. and Catherine
(Birmingham) Clifford, who eventually moved with their family to Napa, where the father was killed in the line
of duty as a member of the police force. He is survived by his widow. William F. Clifford received his education
in the parochial schools of Denver, and he continued to reside in that city until October 4, 1910, when he came
to San Francisco. From the age of sixteen years he had been identified with the egg and poultry business. On coming
here he entered the employ of Armour & Company, with which concern he remained for a short time, going then
to Petaluma. where he remained for three years. He next returned to San Francisco, where he entered the employ
of the Makins Produce Company, with which he remained for three years, and he went from there to Frank M. Ferguson's
produce store in Oakland, where for three years he had charge of the egg room. Mr. Clifford then took charge of
the egg department of Angeli Brothers, in Oakland, remaining thus engaged for three years, and then, on February
28, 1922, he came to Napa and established the Napanee Produce Company, which under his able management has become
the largest firm of that kind in Napa county. He handles a full line of produce and is enjoying a large and constantly
increasing business, necessitating the employment of five men.
Mr. Clifford was married to Miss Edith Williams, who prior to her marriage had charge of the Red Cross work in
Napa. She is a native daughter of California, having been born in San Francisco. To this union have been born two
children, William Francis and Joan Elinore.
Politically the democratic party claims Mr. Clifford's allegiance, and he is a member of the Knights of Columbus,
fourth degree. His achievements prove the force of his character and illustrate his steadfastness of purpose, for
by his own efforts he has advanced to a position of credit and honor in the business circles of the locality, and
he is eminently deserving of the high place which he occupies in popular esteem.
