FRANCIS M. SLOAN, who for the past twenty two years has been identified with the Pennsylvania Railroad Company
as foreman, was born in South Huntingdon township, October 18, 1855, the son of John and Kasiah (Null) Sloan.
Matthew Sloan (grandfather) was the founder of the famijy in Westmoreland county. He removed there from New Jersey
in about 1800, settling near Ruffsdale, where he followed the occupation of farming all his life. In church relations
he was a Lutheran. He married a Miss Johnson, who bore him five children: Henry, Jacob, John, of whom later; Eliza,
married John Shrum; and Mary, married Isaac Snyder.
John Sloan (father) was born near Mendon, Westmoreland county, November 14, 1821. He also followed agricultural
pursuits, and was a member of the Lutheran church. He married Mrs. Kasiah Mackling (nec Null), daughter of Henry
and Elizabeth Null. Their children were: William, a contractor, of Pittcum; Elizabeth, married Robert Watt; Francis
M., of whom later; Alice, married John Shields; and John, an engineer in the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad
Company. John Sloan died December 10, 1867.
Francis M. Sloan acquired his education in the common schools of Westmoreland county, and at the age of twenty-two
years entered into his first regular employment on the Pennsylvania railroad, and subsequently became foreman,
which position he has held for twenty two years. During this long period he has never been absent a day, owing
to sickness. He is a staunch Republican in his political aifliations, and is a trustee and director in the Tarrs
cemetery, and has been a member of the school board for eight years. He is a member of Eunice Lodge, No. 869, I.
O. O. F., in which he has passed all the chairs: the G. F., Lodge No. 8, of Ruffsdale, and is a member and steward
of the Methodist Episcopal church. Mr. Sloan married Phoebe Billhimer, a daughter of David and Elizabeth Billhimer.
Their children are: Ada, died at the age of thirty years, was the wife of J. Frank Evans. Leila K., a graduate
of the State Normal school, in which she was a teacher for several years, married S. L. Schwenck, an attorney-at-law
of West Virginia. Earl D., died at the age of twenty two years, was a graduate of the State Normal school, and
was elected president of the Junior class in 1901. Eva L, a graduate of the Scottdale High school, a student for
one term in the State Normal, and now a teacher in an East Huntingdon school. Walter, resides at home.
