SAMUEL B. REED: Scottdale has no more useful citizen than Samuel B. Reed. He is the great grandson of Peter
Reed, whose son, John Reed, was born and reared in Westmoreland county. He married Margaret Browneller, and their
children were: Emma, married William Patterson; Margaret, married William Springer, Mary, married James Snyder;
Ann Maria, married James Leichty; Josiah, of whom later; and William, a tanner, now deceased.
Josiah Reed, son of John and Margaret (Browneller) Reed, was born in 1823, in Westmoreland county, and learned
the trade of a tanner. During all the active years of his life he followed that calling in connection with farming.
He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. He married Elizabeth, daughter of William and Catherine Cottom,
of Westmoreland county, and their children were: William W.; Mary Catherine; John Irom; Margaret Ann; Elias C.;
Martha Jane; Samuel B., of whom later; Emma Alice; Charles Henry, died at the age of twenty-three; Sarah Bell;
Phoebe Ellen: and Elizabeth Frances.
Samuel B. Reed, son of Josiah and Elizabeth (Cottom) Reed. was born February 8, 1859, in Westmoreiand county, and
was educated in the public schools of East Huntingdon township. In early life he was employed for five or six years
in the coke works of his native county, and then entered the service of the firm of Ruth & Stoner, by whom
he was first employed at general work, and later promoted to the turning lathe. He remained with them eighteen
years, retiring from their service December 23, 1904. Since that time he has been employed by the United States
Casket Company as foreman of the cutting out department. He belongs to the I. O. O. F., Lodge No. 885, and the
Heptasophs, both of Scottdale. In the former organization be has passed all chairs. He is a member of the Methodist
Episcopal church of Scottdale, and is connected with the official board. Mr. Reed married Alice S., daughter of
George and Elizabeth Mumaw, of East Huntingdon township, and they are the parents of four daughters: Jessie S.,
born January 3, 1892; Elizabeth M., born September 9, 1893; Nellie B., born January 13, 1897; and Mildred L., born
December 30, 1903.
