CHARLES E. NAUGLE. The great grandfather of Charles E. Naugle, of Ligonier, was John Naugle, a native of Germany,
whence he emigrated to the United States, settling in Merrietta, Lancaster county, where he is supposed to have
engaged in farming.
Joseph Naugle, son of John Naugle, was born in 1796, in Lancaster county, but moved to Westmoreland county when
a young man and settled in Ligonier, where for some time he was engaged in business as a butcher. Later he moved
to Laughlinstown, where he was the proprietor of a hotel and the owner of a large farm which he cultivated, at
the same time carrying on business as a drover. He was active in the interest of the Republican party. He married
Thankful Grannis, and their children were: Margaret, married Dickson Huston; Frederick; Simon, mentioned hereafter;
Elizabeth, died unmarried; Emmanuel; Mary, married Dr. J. H. Miller, of Greensburg; Bella, married Samuel Cooster;
Rachel, married Edward Shaffer; Susan, married Benjamin Bowman; Emma, married James Schaffer; Alice, married William
Christman; and Joseph, There were also three who died in infancy, making fifteen in all. The father of this large
family died in
Simon Naugle, son of Joseph and Thankful (Grannis) Naugle, was born in 1826, in Ligonier, and in early life adopted
the calling of a farmer. In 1849 he went to California by the overland route, and for three years continued his
quest for gold. He then returned to Ligonier, but after three years spent at home he again turned his face westward
and passed another three years in California, engaging in mercantile business as well as in thining. On returning
once more to his home he resumed farming and thenceforth gave his whole attention to agricultural pursuits until
about fifteen years previous to his death, when he engaged in huckstering. He was an active member of the United
Brethren church. He married Jane Ann, daughter of James and Catherine McMillen and their children were: Josephine,
married George W. Sharp, and is now deceased: Senora, married John Davis; Franklin A., a farmer in Ligonier township;
Bernetta, wife of Edward S. Carnes; Charles E., mentioned hereafter; Crawford A., an engineer; Sheridan, lives
in East Pittsburg; and Catherine, died at the age of eighteen years. The death of Mr. Naugle, the father, occurred
in 1897. Mrs. Naugle, the mother, died in August, 1891, aged fifty eight years.
Charles E. Naugle, son of Simon and Jane Ann (McMillen) Naugle, was born May 12, 1859, and received his education
in the common schools. He remained at home assisting his father in the labors of the farm until the age of seventeen,
when he entered the service of the Ligonier Valley Railroad, being employed in the general repairc department for
one ear, then as brake man and extra conductor. He has remained with the company ever since, and for fifteen years
has held the position of conductor. For two terms he served as school director. He belongs to Ligonier Lodge, No.
331, F. and A. M., of Ligonier, and in politics is a Republican. He and his family are members of the Methodist
Episcopal church. Mr. Naugle married Lottie M., daughter of Henry and Susan Smith, and granddaughter of Jacob Smith,
and they have three sons: George S., born October 24, 1882, graduated from Duff's Business College, Pittsburg,
and is a bookkeeper for the Pennsylvania Railroad at Union Station; Harry M., born September 25, 1884, graduated
from the Drexel institute of Art and Science, Philadelphia, and is an architect and constructing engineer; and
Ralph C., born October 9, 2886, died February 27, 1901.
