JOHN H. MILLER. The family of which John H. Miller, of Scottdale, is a representative is one which has given
many useful citizens to the state of Pennsylvania. John Miller was born in Adams county, and was by trade a cabinet
maker and wheelwright. He followed his calling in his native county and also in the counties of Westmoreland and
Bedford. He married Terressa Obold, and their children were: Alford; Rose Ann, married James Foster; Jane, married
Henry Wolfhope; Joseph, died in childhood; Adeline, married Bernard Wolfhope; William, see forward; and Margaret,
married Henry Friedhoof.
William Miller, son of John and Terressa (Obold) Miller, was born March 15, 1838, in Bedford county, and learned
the shoemaker’s trade, which he has followed in Somerset and Westmoreland counties down to the present time, He
is a member of the Roman Catholic church. He married Mary J., daughter of Jonathan and Sarah Owen, and their children
are: John H., of whom later; Albert, born April 8, 1869, a tinsmith in Scottdaie; Annie, born June 23, 1871, is
engaged in the millinery business in Scottdale: Emily, born April 1, 1873, a Sister of Charity, at St. Joseph,
Greensburg; Elizabeth, born in December, 1876, is in business in Scottdale with her sister Annie; Helena, born
June 18, 1879, resides at home; Alice, born in June, 1881, also at home; Edward, born February 3. 1884, in partnership
with his brother Albert; Leo, born September 10, 1886; Waiter, born July 28, 1888; and Elenora, died in infancy.
John H. Miller, son of William and Mary J. (Owen) Miller, was born April 28, 1867, in Somerset county, where he
was educated in the common schools. At the age of seventeen he went to work in the Scottdale rolling mill, and
is now one of the sheet rollers in the old Medow mill. This mill was built in 1897 by the employes of the former
mill. Mr. Miller was made one of the directors in 1899, and remained in office until the property was sold to I.
W. Frank & company, of Pit tsburg. Mr. Miller belongs to the American Insurance Union, and the Iron-workers’
Association, and is a charter member of the K. C. Lodge, No. 948, of Collinsville. Pennsylvania. He is a member
of the Roman Catholic church of Scottdale. He married, in 1895, Mary Jane McGraw, and their children are: Robert
W., born February 21, 1896; Joseph B., born April 14, 1897; Mary E., born October 25, 1898; James A., born April
25, 1901, and died September 12, 1902; and John E. and Emily J., twins, born May 4, 1903. The latter died October
3, 1903. Mr. Miller built for himself in 1893 .a comfortable and attractive house which is now the home of his
family. Mrs. Miller is the daughter of William and Elizabeth McGraw, natives of Ireland, who emigrated to the United
States about 1860, and settled in New Jersey. They remained there until 1870, when they moved to Fayette county,
Pennsylvania, where they now reside in Connellsville.
