SAMUEL H. MIGHT. Scottdale numbers among its pioneers Samuel H. Might, a grandson of John Might, who lived and
died near Rochester, Pennsylvania. In early life he was a farmer, and later became one of the old school stagedrivers,
owning the stage route, and also the proprietor of a hotel. He was the father of children: John; Samuel, of whom
later; Sarah, married George Smith; and Mary, married Johnson Littell.
Samuel Might, son of John Might, was born November 8, 1822, and spent his life as a farmer in and near Pittsburg.
He was an active member of the United Presbyterian church in which for years he held the office of elder. His wife
was Ellen Dougherty, and their children were: John; Sarah, married Samuel Ferguson; Elizabeth, died in infancy;
Jane, deceased; Mary Ellen, married William Gordon; Samuel H., of whom later; Nevin, died in infancy; George S.;
James Fremont; Wilson; Rebecca; and Margaret; both of whom died in childhood.
Samuel H. Might, son of Samuel and Ellen (Dougherty) Might, was born November 16, 1850, in Allegheny county, Pennsylvania,
where he was educated in the common schools. When about thirteen years old he went to work in a brickyard in the
Sixth ward of Pittsburg, remaining there seven years. He moved to Scottdale in 1873, being one of the first settlers
of the town. There he found employment in the iron works of Everson, Graft & McCrum, which has since become
a part of the American steel plant. Entering the establishment in a htunble capacity, he has by industry and good
conduct advanced until he now holds the position of a roller, and is one of the most capable and trusted men employed
by the company. He belongs to the Heptasophs Lodge, No. 172, of Scottdale, and is a member of the L mted Brethren
church of that place Mr Might married Harriet Elizabeth, daughter of Jacob S. and Lucy A. (Deatz) Phillippi, and
their children were: Homer P., born June 6, 1880, is employed in the mill with his father, and married, December
22, 1904, Hazel May Cox; Lucy Ellen, born Octohcr 7, 1882: Hattie, born December 14, 1885, and is a graduate of
the Scottdale high school; Ada, born June 2, 1889, and died October 17, 1892; Chester S., died in infancy; Mabel,
born November 29, 1894; and Ralph Everson, born March 27, 1899.
