DARWIN L. FITZGERALD, a resident of Scottdale, Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, was born in Armstrong county,
March 17, 1866, the son of Daniel and Judith (Kimmel) Fitzgerald.
Daniel Fitzgerald (grandfather) was a native of Ireland, who when a boy emigratea from Ireland in company with
his father and seven brothers. When, he was old enough to earn his own living he choose the life of a farmer, and
followed that occupation all his life. He married Margaret Green, and they had twelve children, two boys and ten
girls.
Daniel Fitzgerald (father) was born in Armstrong in 1820, and he followed agricultural pursuits in his native county.
In politics he was a staunch Republican, and served his township as school director for some time. In religious
faith he was a member of the Lutheran church, and was an elder in same for years. He. married Judith Kimmel, daughter
of Daniel and Elizabeth Kimmel, and their children were: Almira, wife of Richard Shutt; Cornelia; Seth, a farmer
of Armstrong county; Etheliah, wife of Alexander Kerr Thomas, died at the age of twenty two years, Ernest, a farmer
of Armstrong county; Darwin L., mentioned hereafter; and Norwin L., twin of Darwin L. The death of Daniel Fitzgerald
occurred December 21, 1899, and his demise was sincerely mourned by a large circle of friends.
Darwin L. Fitzgerald obtained his educational training in the common schools, and after leaving school remained
on the home farm until he was twenty one years of age. He was then employed in a roiling mill in Apollo, where
he remained eleven months. He was for the next eighteen months in the sen ice of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company,
being emplosed in the freight car shops. He returned to Apollo, and went to work for the P. H. Lauffman Company,
being thus engaged for two and a half years. His next removal was to Armstrong county, where he was for three years
occupied in agricultural pursuits. Mr. Fitzgerald went to Saltsburg, Indiana county, and for a year and a half
worked there in the rolling mills. He entered the services of the United States Steel Company, April 19, 1899,
working as cold roller in the old Meadow mill until June 9 of the same year, when he was engaged by the H. C. Frick
Coal Company, with whom he remained nine months. He then returned to the old Meadow mill, and has been continuously
employed there ever since. He is a skillful, capable workman, and renders his employers the most valuable services.
Mr. Fitzgerald is a member of the W. O. W., No. 97, of Scottdale, in which he was clerk for two years. He married,
September 13, 1886, Jopephine Miller, and they had one child, Norman T., born November 30, 1889. Mrs. Fitzgerald
died December 3, 1889, and Mr. Fitzgerald married for his second wife, November 25, 1891, Alice M. Kirkland. and
one child was born to them, Darwin K., born May 15, 1894. For his third wife he married, January 30, 1905, Addie
Bartholomew, of Meadville, Pennsylvania.
