HOWARD M. DAVIS. One of those men who may truly be said to have been the architects of their fortunes is Howard
M. Davis, of Scottdale. He is a great-grandson of Abram Davis, who emigrated from Wales and settled in Indiana
county, Pennsylvania, where he engaged in farming during the remainder of his life. He exerted himself much in
the interests of the Whigs, and was an active member of the Baptist church.
William L. Davis, son of Abram Davis, was born in Indiana county, Pennsylvania, and was a lifelong farmer. He assisted
his father to clear a tract of four hundred and fifty acres of land. He married Elizabeth Ansley, and their children
were: Emma, Sarah, married Captain P. C. Spencer; Albert, who was a farmer in Nebraska; Joseph, a farmer in Indiana
county; Marion, an attorney in Jefferson county; and James J., mentioned hereafter. Mr. Davis, the father, was
an excellent man, holding the office of deacon in the Baptist church.
James J. Davis, son of William L. and Elizabeth (Ansley) Davis, was born in Indiana county, and in early life learned
the trade of a carriage builder, which he followed in his native place and in Apollo. For years he was an elder
and deacon in the Baptist church. He married Rachel, daughter of James Simpson and Ann (Armstrong) McAnulty, and
seven children were born to them: Howard M., mentioned hereafter; May M., Virginia E., William T., died in childhood;
Emma S., James Mc., and Helen.
Howard M. Davis, son of James J. and Rachel (McAnulty) Davis, was born September 23, 1872, in Indiana county, where
he was educated in the common schools. At the age of seventeen he began to work in the mill at Apollo, remaining
there about six years, after which he went, in 1897, to Scottdale and took a position as a roller with the Scottdale
iron & Steel Company. About 1900, in recognition of his ability, he was advanced to the office of superintendent,
which he still retains. He is a member of Lodge No. 562, F. and A. M.. the Elks, Lodge No. 777, and the Grand Fraternity,
all of Scottdale. In politics he is an active Republican, and is chairman of his ward committee. Mr. Davis married
Elizabeth, daughter of Nicholas and Catherine (Weibel) Kromer, and they have three children: Irene E., born July
30, 1899; Ruth K., born November 6, 1901 ; and Dorothy R., born September 20, 1903.
