ARTHUR EDWARD COLLINS, a representative citizen of Scottdale, was born December 9, 1866, in Burmingham, England,
son of John and Sarah M. (Green) Collins, natives of Scotland, whose family consisted of nine children: Frederick,
died in infancy; Arthur Edward, see forward; Sarah A., married George Skidmore; Albert E., a resident of Scottdale,
a sketch of whom appears elsewhere in this work; Thomas, a resident of Pittsburg; Ada, married William Stowe, of
Ohio; Elizabeth A., a trained nurse; Flora, married Roy Bryner; and Harriet A: Collins. John Collins, father of
Arthur E. Collins, emigrated to the United States in 1888, settling in Youngstown, Ohio. He was a sheet roller
by trade, which line of work he followed for one year in Youngstown, after which he moved to Scottdale, Pennsylvania,
and there followed his trade up to 1900, when he was appointed superintendent of the old Meadow Mill, in which
capacity he served up to his decease, May, 1902. He was a member of the Baptist church. Mrs. Collins died in 1897.
Arthur E. Collins was reared and educated in his native land, and in 1888, shortly before attaining his majority,
accompanied his parents to the United States, settling in Youngstown, Ohio, and for a period of fifteen months
thereafter was employed in the sheet mills. He then changed his abode to Scottdale, Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania,
and secured employment as a roller in the sheet mills of that borough, and continued as such until 1897. During
the big strike of that year he left and went to Pittsburg, and there engaged with Zug and Company in the Sabre
iron works, continuing his connection up to the present time (1905). He and his family took up their residence
in Pittsburg, in 1899, but in August, 1904, returned to Scottdale, his present location, where he is the owner
of considerable real estate, having erected six new houses and improved and renovated two other dwellings, from
all of which he derives a goodly income. He is a member of the R. A., of Scottdaie, also the K. P. Lodge, No. 447,
of Scottdale, in which he has passed all chairs. At Youngstown, Ohio, December 24, 1887, Mr. Collins married Harriet
Prestwood, daughter of Thomas and Harriet Prestwood, of England. Their children are: Harriet Clara, born April
10, 1889; Sarah Ann, born June 28, 1892; Frederick Henry, born January 14, 1895; and Mary Ethel, born June 3, 1899.
