L. H. COBB, lumberman, Coudersport, son of Horace and Diana Cobb, was born at Spring Mills, Allegany county, N. Y., in 1849. He was educated at an academical institution, and at an early day began teaching at Woodhull, Steuben Co., N. Y. After teaching several terms, in 1873 he finished his studies at Alfred University, in Allegany county, N. Y., read law with Messrs. Olmsted & Larrabee, was admitted to the bar in 1876, and practiced law in Coudersport from that time until 1886; in 1880 he was elected district attorney, and served three years. Close application to business, however, and the enforced confinement necessitated a change of occupation, and he made a purchase of five tracts of land, in all 2,800 acres, valued at $42,000, in about half of which he was associated with his brothers. He erected twenty four buildings in and about the borough, built two saw mills on his purchase and a shingle factory; he also has a store at Homer. in 1879 Mr. Cobb married Edith, daughter of William Dickinson, of Horuby, Steuben Co., N. Y. They have but one child living, having lost two children (twins) when about a year old. Mr. and Mrs. Cobb are active members of the Methodist Church, and very much interested in the cause of temperance and morality.
