Stephen T. Runzo, of Cresson, is president of one of the largest and most extensive wholesale fruit and grocery
businesses in Cambria County. He was born at Palermo, Italy, Nov. 19, 1868, and is the son of Joseph and Mary (Giglio)
Runzo.
Joseph Runzo, deceased, spent his life in Italy, where he engaged extensively in transportation work. His wife
is also deceased. They had the following children: Mary, deceased, was the wife of Samuel Cosso; Samuel, engaged
in the fruit business at Blairsville, Pa.; and S. T., the subject of this sketch.
S. T. Runzo grew up in Italy and was quite a young boy when his father died. He followed in the same transportation
work until 1901, at which time he came to the United States and settled in Pittsburgh. He spent some time at Indiana,
Pa., and in 1905 located at Cresson, where he immediately engaged in the fruit business on a small scale. His business
increased rapidly and in 1913 he built a large store on the corner of Second and Keystone streets, where the business
is now located. Another large store was erected in 1917 and the business incorporated in 1925 with the following
officers: S. T. Runzo, president; B. Traino, vice president; S. P. Mazzo, treasurer; and Samuel Runzo, secretary.
Joseph G. Runzo is manager.
On Sept. 10, 1894, Mr. Runzo was united in marriage with Miss Mary Scaclo, also a native of Italy. They have five
children: Mary, married B. Traino, lives at Cresson; Vera, married S. P. Mazza, lives at Cresson; Joseph G., married
Esther Beke, lives at Cresson; Samuel A., secretary of his father's business, is unmarried; and Rose, a student.
Mr. Runzo is active in politics and is. a member of the Catholic Church and Italian Society. He has a wide acquaintance
throughout the community and is well liked.
