Biography of Edward A. Riley

Edward A. Riley, paymaster of the Lorain Steel Company, Johnstown, is among the well known and highly esteemed citizens of Johnstown. He was born in this city and is a son of Thomas and Margaret (Garrity) Riley.

Thomas Riley was born in Cavan, Ireland, and came to America with his parents when he was two years of age. They settled in Johnstown where they spent their entire life. Thomas Riley received a good common school education and when a young man entered the employ of the Cambria Iron Works, and remained with this company during his active business career. His wife was born in Forestburg, Md. She died in 1889 and he died in 1899. They are buried in Lower Yoder Catholic Cemetery. The children born to this union now living are: Mary, married T. B. Goggin, resides in Altoona, Pa.; Frank, resides in Johnstown; and Edward A., the subject of this sketch. Mr. and Mrs. Riley were members of St. John's Catholic Church.

Edward A. Riley received his early education in the parochial schools of Johnstown and was graduated from St. Vincent's College, Latrobe, Pa. He began his active business career as a time clerk in the offices of the Lorain Steel Company, later being made chief timekeeper. In 1921 he was promoted to the very important position of paymaster of the Lorain Steel Company.

Politically Mr. Riley is a Democrat. He has served as a member of the select council from the Twelfth Ward and was reelected, but served only part of the second term and then resigned. He is a member of St. John's Catholic Church
