L. C. Nees, who is successfully engaged in the general mercantile business at Geistown, is a World war veteran. He was born at Geistown, Aug. 10, 1887, and is the son of Conrad and Rose (Geis) Nees.

Conrad Nees, deceased, was a native of Germany. When 20 years of age he emigrated to this country and settled near Geistown, where he engaged in general farming. He died in 1911. His widow was born at Geistown, and is the daughter of Joseph Geis, after whom the town of Geistown was named. He was one of the first settlers of this section of Cambria County and for many years owned and operated a distillery on the present site of the town. He was a prominent citizen of this section during the early days. To Conrad and Rose (Geis) Nees the following children were born: Veronica, lives at Pittsburgh; John, lives at Johnstown; May, lives at Pittsburgh; Louise, lives at Geistown; L. C., the subject of this sketch; Margaret, lives at Detroit, Mich.; Dorothy, lives at Geistown; Helen, lives at Washington, D. C.; William, lives at Washington, D. C.; and Thomas, lives at Geistown.

After completing his schooling at Geistown and Johnstown, L. C. Nees took a business course at Rowe College, Johnstown. He then farmed for a while on his father's land, and was later employed by F. S. Love & Company, Johnstown. He went to California in 1912, returned to Cambria County in 1913 and farmed for four more years, after which he went to Detroit, Mich., where he was connected with the Cadillac and Studebaker factories. Upon his return to Johnstown he volunteered for service in the World war and served with the Naval Aviation Department, being stationed at Bay Shore, N. Y., and later at Pensacola, Fla., and Norfolk, Va. He served for 23 months with the rank of chief mechanic's mate. After his return to Johnstown, Mr. Nees was connected with the Lorain Steel Company until he established his present business at Geistown. He carries a high grade line of groceries and meats, and also operates a gasoline filling station and automobile accessory shop.

Mr. Nees was married March 27, 1921, to Miss Christina Woelfel, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Woelfel, of Johnstown. They have two daughters, Betty Rose and Adelaide.

Mr. Nees is a Democrat, a member of the Catholic Church, and is affiliated with the Knights of Columbus, third degree, and Loyal Order of Moose. He is well and favorably known in the community where he has spent practically his entire life.
