Biography of Martin T. McDermott

Martin T. McDermott, president of the Miners and Merchants Bank, is a substantial business man of Nanty Glo. He was born in Cloonmendy, County Galway, Ireland, Aug. 8, 1870, and is a son of John and Hannah (Tulley) McDermott.

Both John McDermott and his wife were natives of Cloonmendy, Ireland. He was a farmer and land owner in Ireland and later lived in England. In June, 1890, he and his wife emigrated to the United States and settled in Clearfield County, Pa., where they spent the remainder of their lives. They are deceased and buried at Osceola Mills. To Mr. and Mrs. McDermott 11 children were born, as follows: Thomas, Patrick, and John, all deceased; Peter, lives at Hawk's Run, Pa., where he is engaged in the general mercantile business, has served a term in the State Legislature from Clearfield County; Cecelia, the widow of Thomas Harding, lives at Hawk's Run; Michael, deceased; Martin T., the subject of this sketch; Luke, lives at Tyrone, Pa.; Ellen, married George Myers, lives at Nanty Glo; and two children died in infancy.

Martin T. McDermott received his education in Ireland and England and came to the United States in June, 1888. He settled at Hawk's Run, where he worked as a miner. He was later connected with the Beech Creek Railroad Company for five years, and in 1904 removed to Nanty Glo, where he was connected with the Nanty Glo Coal Mining Company as mine foreman, and later with Barker Brothers Coal Company as superintendent.! From 1911 until 1923 Mr. McDermott successfully managed the Home Hotel at Nanty Glo, which was destroyed by fire in 1923. He is one of the organizers of the Miners and Merchants Bank, and has served as its president since its organization.

On June 1, 1896, Mr. McDermott was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Doyle, the daughter of Peter and Catherine (Flannigan) Doyle, who came to this country from Padium, Lancashire, England, in 1887, and settled at Phillipsburg, Pa. He was a stationary engineer. Both Mr. and Mrs. Doyle are deceased. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. McDermott: (1) Catherine, married William P. Patterson, mining engineer, lives at Nanty Glo, and they have three children, William P. Jr., Martin, and Mary Constance; (2) Nora, married Andrew Malloy, lives at Nanty Glo, and they have a son, Doyle; (3) Anna,. married Robert McDermit, lives at Detroit, Mich., where he is connected with the Studebaker Corporation; (4) Genevieve, lives with her sister at Detroit; and (5) Frank, a student.

Mr. McDermott has always been a Republican, has served as a member of the City Council for six years, and was re-elected in 1925. He is a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Mr. McDermott has an extensive acquaintance throughout Cambria County.
