Dr. J. P. MacFarlane, a capable physician and surgeon of Cambria County, who is engaged in the practice of his
profession at Vintondale, is a native of Scotland. He was born at Gartsharie, near Glasgow, Aug. 28, 1878, and
is the son of John and Jane (Patterson) MacFarlane.
John MacFarlane emigrated to the United States from Scotland many years ago and settled at Renova, Pa., where he
worked at his trade as a moubder in the railroad shops. He later returned to Scotland, where he served as superintendent
of the Gartsharie Iron Works for five years. He then came to the United States and located at Blossburg, Pa., where
he was superintendent of the foundries of Moore & Company. In 1900 he worked in the mines at Arnot, Pa., after
which he removed to Tyler, Pa., where he was foreman of the Cascade Coal & Coke Company. He has lived retired
at Vintondale and Punxsutawney since 1919. Mr. MacFariane has always been an ardent supporter of the Republican
party but has never aspired to political office. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church and is affiliated with
the F. & A. M. No. 350, Blossburg, Williamsport Consistory 32nd degree, and Irem Temple, Wilkesbarre. To John
and Jane (Patterson) MacFarlane five children were born; Grace, deceased; J. P., the subject of this sketch; Margaret,
married M. Graham, lives at St. Petersburg, Fla.; Andrew L., lives at Wiliiamsport, Pa., is a 32nd degree Mason;
and Janette, lives at Punxsutawney, Pa., where she is directoress of nurses in Adrian Hospital.
Dr. J. P. MacFariane attended the public schools of Arnot, Pa., and in 1900 was graduated from Mansfield State
Normal School. In 1905 he received his degree as Doctor of Medicine from Jefferson Medical College, after which
he served as resident physician at the Williamsport Hospital for 18 months. In 1909 he removed to Nanty Glo, where
he remained until 1911. He has since engaged in practice at Vintondale, where he is physician for the Vinton Colliery
Company and B. R. & P. Railroad.
In 1908 Doctor MacFarlane was married to Miss Alice K. Jose, the daughter of George W. and Nannie J. (Mahaffey)
Jose. George W. Jose was born at Dexter, Penobscot County, Maine, Aug. 15, 1845, the son of Richard and Catherine
C. (Crockett) Jose, who spent their entire lives in the Pine Tree state, the father dying in 1888 and the mother
in 1890. The paternal grandfather came from England at an early age and located in Maine, where he engaged in farming
and reared a family of five sons: William, Oliver, Nathaniel, Moses and Richard. Two were masters of ocean vessels.
In 1878 George W. Jose married Miss Nannie J. Mahaffey, the daughter of Robert Mahaffey. They had four children:
Melvina, Alice MacFarlane, Inez and Elsie. After his marriage Mr. Jose located at Mahaffey, in Clearfield County,
where he resided until 1881, at which time he removed to LaJose, where he engaged in farming until 1886. He erected
and operated the Hotel LaJose ahd was instrumental in having a post office moved from Newburg to LaJose. From 1890
until 1894 he engaged in the general mercantile business. He was a Democrat, a member of the Methodist Episcopal
Church and Masonic Lodge. To Dr. J. P. and Alice K. (Jose) MacFarlane one son was born, James P., Jr., born March
10, 1917.
Doctor MacFarlane is a Republican, has served as president of the board of health and is now secretary. He has
also served as justice of the peace. He is a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Ebensburg, Masonic Lodge
No. 350, Blossburg, Portage Royal Arch Chapter No. 195, Cambria Council No. 32, Oriental Commandery No. 61 of Johnstown,
Williamsport Consistory 32nd degree, Irem Temple, Wilkesbarre, Johnstown Shrine Club and Tall Cedars of Lebanon.
He is identified with the Cambria County Medical Society, Pennsylvania State Medical Association, American Medical
Association, and Ptolemy Society. Doctor MacFarlane is widely known and has well earned the respect and esteem
of his many friends.
