J. R. Jones, supervising principal of the Vintondale schools, is a veteran of the World War and a widely known
educator of Cambria County. He was born at Millerstown, Perry County, Pa., Jan. 23, 1893, and is the son of J.
J. and Margaret (Donnelly) Jones.
J. J. Jones, deceased, was a leading citizen of Perry County, Pa. He was born in Juniata County, Pa., where he
spent his boyhood. He attended normal school and was successfully engaged in teaching school for 25 years. He then
became interested in the general mercantile business at Millerstown, Pa., where he died in 1925. He is buried at
Newport. His widow, who was born at Donnelly Mills, Pa., now resides at Millerstown, Mr. Jones was a Republican
and for many years served as school director and road supervisor. He held membership in the Methodist Church. To
Mr. and Mrs. Jones four children were born: Lewis, engaged in the restaurant business at Elizabeth, N. J.; Minnie,
married R. M. Storer, lives at Saint Louis, Mo.; Logan, general merchant, lives at Millerstown, Pa.; and J. R.,
the subject of this sketch.
After completing his early schooling at Millerstown, J. R., Jones was graduated from Shippensburg Normal School
in 1910. He has also, for a number of summer terms, attended the University of Pittsburgh. He taught for three
terms in the schools of Mercersburg, Pa. In 1913 he taught in the Millerstown High School, spent the following
two years teaching in Center County, Pa., and from 1916 until 1918 was connected with the United States Bureau
of Education in the Philippine Islands. In 1918 he enlisted for service in the World War as a member of Company
E, 11th Regiment, United States Marines, and served in France for ten months. He was discharged in August, 1919,
and in 1920 accepted his present position as supervising principal of the Vintondaie schools.
In 1921 Mr. Jones was united in marriage with Miss Ethel Patterson, the daughter of Joseph and Sadie Patterson,
natives of Pennsylvania and residents of Johnstown, where Mr. Patterson is superintendent of the Loyal Hannah Coal
& Coke Company. To Mr. and Mrs. Jones a son, Wayne Robert, was born Feb. 9, 1923.
Politically Mr. Jones is a Republican. He holds membership in the Methodist Church, F. & A. M. No. 312, Ebensburg,
Williamsport Consistory 32nd degree, Jaffa Temple and Shrine Club of Altoona, and Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Ebensburg.
Mr. Jones is popular among his wide circle of friends. Mr. Jones has been elected and is now serving as supervising
principal of the Summerhill Township Public Schools, Cambria County, Pa. Address: Beaverdale, Pa.
