Miss Pearl I. Hood, city treasurer of Johnstown, ranks among Cambria County's prominent women, She was born in Indiana County, Pa., and is the daughter of the late James A. and Emma J. (Edwards) Hood, natives of Indiana County, Pa.

James A. Hood came to Johnstown with his family and was successfully engaged in the lumber business here for several years. His holdings were absorbed by the Murdock Lumber Company, now one of Johnstown's leading lumber concerns. Mr. Hood died in 1884, and his wife died in 1919. She taught school in Johnstown for a number of years and was thus engaged at the time of her death. Mr. and Mrs. Hood had two daughters: Pearl L, the subject of this sketch; and Elizabeth May, a teacher in the Johnstown public schools.

Pearl I. Hood received her early education in the public schools of Johnstown, attended Morrell Business College, and was graduated from Indiana State Normal School. She then engaged in teaching and for 15 years was a member of the faculty of Somerset Street School. During her summer vacations Miss Hood was employed in the city treasurer's office, and in 1912 was appointed assistant treasurer, which position she filled until her election as city treasurer in November, 1923. She was nominated over six candidates in the primaries on the Republican ticket, and at the general election was given a very substantial majority. She has proven very efficient and her department has been well managed.

Miss Hood is a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Young Women's Missionary Society, W. C. T. U., American Red Cross, Quota Club; Pride of Valley Council No. 56, Daughters of America; Women's Republican Club; Protected Home Circle, Johnstown, No. 72; King's Daughters, and the Y. W. C. A. She is serving as a member of the board of directors of the latter organization. Miss Hood is one of the dependable citizens of Johnstown, and has many friends.
