Biography of R. W. Beck
Cambria County, PA Biographies





R. W. Beck, who is successfully engaged in business as a plumbing and heating contractor in Johnstown, ranks among the leading business men of this city. He was born at Newberry, York County, Pa., Sept. 7, 1877, and is a son of William B. and Eva Jane (Herman) Beck. Mr. Beck was a pioneer merchant of Newberry.

R. W. Beck was educated in the district schools of his community, and in those days the school term was six months out of a year. On account of assisting in work at home he was only able to attend school about three or four months each year. At the age of 14 he quit school and served an apprenticeship at the plumbing trade at Mount Woolf, York County, where he remained for three years. From there he went to Hanover, Pa., where he was employed by a plumbing firm for four years. He spent a year in Pittsburgh and in 1903 came to Johnstown and was in the employ of the P. A. Barnhardt Company until he established his own business in 1909. His place of business is located at 507 Franklin Street, Johnstown. Mr. Beck employs 10 men and has a well established business. Among some of the larger jobs may be mentioned the new 12 story building for GatelyFitzgerald Company and the Bard Hotel, also the Gallikens Dairy and Ice Cream plant. The majority of Mr. Beck's work is residence work, and he has done the heating and plumbing in over 40 houses for William Heberline, local builder, in the past couple of years.

On Jan. 25, 1917, Mr. Beck was married to Miss Jane Griffith, a daughter of Dr. Harvey and Alice (Conrad) Griffith of this city, where Doctor Griffith is a leading physician. To Mr. and Mrs. Beck three children have been born: R. W., Jr., Alice Louise, and Hayes Herman.

Mr. Beck is independent in politics. He is a member of the English Lutheran Church and belongs to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, Sons of Veterans, and the Masonic bodies.
