Biography of Dr. John W. Bancroft

Dr. John Walter Bancroft, a prominent physician of Johnstown, is a veteran of the World war. He was born in this city, Jan. 21, 1887, and is the son of William B. and Ida E. (Coho) Bancroft.

William B. Bancroft, deceased, was a well known business man of Altoona, Pa., where he engaged in the real estate business for a number of years. His wife now resides in that city.

Dr. John Walter Bancroft received his early education in the public schools of Altoona, was graduated from Mercersburg Academy in 1904, from Franklin and Marshall College in 1908, and in 1914 received his degree as Doctor of Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. His interne work was taken at Germantown Hospital, Philadelphia, and the following six months Doctor Bancroft was identified with the Rockefeller International Health Board. After returning to Johnstown he served as public school physician in charge of school hygiene. On April 9, 1918, he was called into active service in the army, after having volunteered in 1917. He served as a first lieutenant and was stationed at Camp Colt, Gettysburg, Pa. Doctor Bancroft has engaged in the practice of his profession, with offices at 410 Lincoln Street, since 1919.

On May 18, 1916, Doctor Bancroft was united in marriage with Miss Mary Catherine Crouse, the daughter of Harry F. and Lydia (Royer) Crouse, of Fannettsburg, Pa. To Dr. and Mrs. Bancroft have been born three children: Jane Winifred, John Walter, Jr., and Mary Catherine.

Doctor Bancroft is identified with the Cambria County Medical Society, Pennsylvania Medical Society, and the American Medical Association. He is a Republican, a member of the Episcopal Church, American Legion, Johnstown Post No. 294, Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and the Lions Club. He is a member of University Lodge No. 610, F. and A. M., Philadelphia, Pa.; Caldwell Consistory of Bloomsburg, Pa., and Almas Shrine, Washington, D. C. Doctor Bancroft is a capable, energetic, and public spirited citizen of Johnstown.
