Arthur Appleyard, general superintendent of the Logan Coal Company at Beaverdale, is among Cambria County's
enterprising and successful businessmen. He was born at Purston, Yorkshire, England, Aug. 7, 1875, and is the son
of Moses and Mary (Strell) Appleyard.
Moses Appleyard, deceased, was a native of England. When a young man he came to the United States and engaged in
coal mining at Ehrenfelt and Dunlo, Pa. Hem was later employed with the Berwin White Coal Company at Dunlo, Pa.
Mr. Appleyard died in 1922, and his widow resides at Lilly, Pa. She was born in Derbyshire, England. To Mr. and
Mrs. Appleyard 14 children were born, the following of whom are living (1926): Joseph, James, William, Arthur,
Mary, and Florence.
Arthur Appleyard was reared and educated in England, and after coming to this country worked in the coal mines
with his father at Ehrenfelt, Pa. He was also employed by the Berwin White Coal Company, and in 1903 became identified
with the Logan Coal Company. He served as mine superintendent for eleven years and has been general superintendent
since 1914. The Logan Coal Company was founded in 1900 and owns and operates two mines at Dunlo, five mines at
Beaverdale, and one at Rutherford.
On Feb. 17, 1897, Mr. Appleyard was married to Miss Jane Law, the daughter of Samuel and Eliza (Burns) Law of Dunlop.
Mr. Law, deceased, was a hotel keeper of Lloydell, Pa. His widow resides at Beaverdale. Mr. and Mrs. Appleyard
have four sons: Joseph, was graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1922, now a graduate student at that
institution; Samuel Harold, was graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1926 with the degree of Doctor
of Dental Surgery; C. Russell, attends Geneva College; and Arthur, Jr., at home.
Mr. Appleyard is also president of the Peoples Deposit Bank, Beaverdale. He is affiliated with the Independent
Order of Odd Fellows, Patriotic American Legion, and is a charter member of the Knights of Pythias, Dunlo.
