L. S. Ward, secretary and treasurer of the Columbiana County Mutual Insurance Company, Lisbon, ranks among the
representative business men and highly esteemed citizens of Columbiana County. He was born at Franklin Square,
Salem Township, Columbiana County, Dec. 7, 1866, and is the son of Levi and Angeline (George) Ward, both deceased.
Mr. Ward was a prosperous farmer of Salem Township for many years. He and his wife are buried in the Kemble Church
Cemetery.
L. S. Ward attended the district schools of Salem Township and Mount Hope Academy, one of the early schools of
Columbiana County. He taught school for several years and was later identified with the American Sewer Pipe Company,
and the American Tin Plate Company at Lisbon, Ohio and Chester, W. Va. Since 1905 Mr. Ward has been connected with
the Columbiana County Mutual Insurance Company in various capacities and since 1922 he has been secretary and treasurer.
On April 23, 1890, Mr. Ward was united in marriage with Miss Anna Rees, of Lisbon, the daughter of John and Mary
Rees, both deceased. They have a daughter, Esther, who is the wife of Dr. McCandless, of Lisbon, a sketch of whom
appears elsewhere in this history. To Dr. and Mrs. McCandless has been born a daughter, Dorothy Jane.
Mr. Ward is a Republican, a member of the Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows,
and Kiwanis Club.
The Columbiana County Mutual Insurance Company of Lisbon was founded March 2, 1837, and is among the oldest and
most reliable insurance businesses in this section of the country. They are writers of general insurance and during
the year of 1925 carried on $15,155,466 worth of business. The company operates in Ohio exclusively and has 100
agents as its representatives. The original officers and directors of the company were: Benjamin Hanna, Samuel
Shriner, Peter Spiker, J. H. Shields, Godfrey Beaumont, Henry Trunic, William Carey, Daniel Whitacre, Levi Hanna,
Jonathan Hamilton, Jr., Joshua Hanna, John Armstrong, William Heiman, James McElroy, and William D. Lepper. The
company's first policy was issued by Erastus Eells, first president, to Martin Heiman, and covered household goods.
The present officers of the Columbiana County Mutual Insurance Company are: S. D. Longshore, president; and Mr.
Ward, secretary and treasurer. The directors are: S. D. Longshore, Mr. Ward, E. M. Crosser, C. W. Huston, R. J.
Wilcoxen, I. C. Beam, J. J. Bennett, and Dr. C. McCandless.
