George C. Walter, owner and manager of the "Smiling Stone Service Station," located on North Main
Street, Columbiana, is among the well known young business men of Columbiana. He was born at Evans City, Butler
County, Pa., Oct. 14, 1881, and is a son of Christian Gottlieb and Willa (Musser) Walter.
Christian Gottlieb Walter, deceased, followed carriage making during his active business career. He died Nov. 29,
1922 and is buried at Rochester, Pa. His widow resides at Nutley, N. J. Mr. and Mrs. Walter were the parents of
the following children: W. E., lives in McKees Rocks, Pa.; Emma T., married Raymond A. Vance, lives at Rochester,
Pa.; Mary A., married R. J. McGovern, lives at Nutley, N. J.; George C., the subject of this sketch; and John M.,
who lives in Nutley, N. J.
After attending the public schools of Pittsburgh and Rochester, Pa., George C. Walter attended the Indiana Normal
School, at Indiana, Pa. While there he was coach of athletics during 1898 and 1899. Mr. Walter began his business
career in the employ of R. G. Gamble, wholesale hat manufacturers, Pittsburgh, with whom he remained for five years.
He left this firm and entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, Pittsburgh, where he served for
one year. He next engaged in business for himself as a certified public accountant, which business he followed
for four years. He was with the Standard Life Insurance Company, Pittsburgh, for five years, and was auditor at
the Sebring Tire & Rubber Company, Sebring, Ohio, for seven years. On Sept. 20, 1924, Mr. Walter established
his present business at Columbiana. He carries a complete line of automobile accessories, as well as Vahey gas
and oil. The station which is of stone construction was built in 1924 and is modern in every respect.
On May 6, 1903, Mr. Walter was married to Miss Daisy Gertrude Mangus of Pittsburgh, Pa., a daughter of Joseph B.
and Mary Emma (Martin) Magus, and they have two children: Gertrude Hope, born Nov. 12, 1905; and George Emerson,
born Oct. 1, 1907, died in infancy.
In politics Mr. Walter is independent. He is a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Sebring, and belongs
to Sebring Lodge 626 F. & A. M. Mr. Walter and his family have a wide circle of friends and are favorably known.
