E. A. Tinsman is among the reliable and substantial business men of Salem, where he is president and general
manager of the Salem Rubber Company. He is a native of Ohio, born in Norton Township, Summit County, April 12,
1875, and the son of Isaac and Mary (Myers) Tinsman.
Isaac Tinsman, deceased, was a farmer during his life. For a number of years before his death he lived retired
at Akron, Ohio. He died in 1915.
After completing his schooling in the public schools of Akron, E. A. Tinsman entered the employ of the Goodrich
Rubber Company of that city, with whom he remained for four years. He was then connected with the Diamond Rubber
Company for 13 years, first as assistant mill foreman and later as factory foreman. His next position was as assistant
superintendent of the factory of the Portage Rubber Company and he was later promoted to factory manager. In March,
1919, Mr. Tinsman became connected with the Standard Tire Company of Willoughby, Ohio, as vice president and general
manager, which positions he held until his present connection in 1921.
The Salem Rubber Company ranks among the leading industries of its kind in Columbiana County. It was formerly the
Porter Rubber Company and in November, 1921, was reorganized as the Salem Rubber Company. They are manufacturers
of high grade tires and tubes and carry on an extensive trade throughout the United States, having their products
handled by such well known firms as Macy's and Wanamaker's, New York City; William Taylor Son & Company, Cleveland;
Marshall Field & Company, Chicago; and Hudson Bond in Detroit, Mich. Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and
Minneapolis are also large centers of distribution for the Salem tires and tubes.
On April 26, 1900, Mr. Tinsman was united in marriage with Miss Clara Jane Haer, of Akron, Ohio, and the daughter
of Jacob and Marie Haler, residents of that city. They have two daughters: Viola May, married M. P. Ellsworth,
who is connected with the Salem Rubber Company, was graduated from Western Reserve University, Cleveland, in 1923;
and Ruby, a graduate of Willoughby High School, and now a student at the University of Wisconsin.
Politically, Mr. Tinsman is a Republican. He holds membership in the Grace Reformed Church of Akron, and belongs
to the Salem Chamber of Commerce, Salem Golf Club, and Rotary Club.
