Jerry Shontz is among the successful and representative merchants of Columbiana, where he has engaged in the
grocery business for 30 years. He was born in Butler County, Pa., Aug. 25, 1862, and is a son of Abraham and Christina
Abraham Shontz was born in Butler County, Pa., in 1832, and died in 1909. His wife, also a native of that county,
was born in 1836, and died in 1904. They were the parents of the following children: Isaac, Julia, and Letitia,
all deceased; Samuel, lives in Detroit, Mich.; Jerry, the subject of this sketch; Sadie, the wife of M. Hassinist,
lives at Scottdale, Pa.; Aaron F., lives near Canfield, Ohio; Mrs. Hattie Haller, lives in Pittsburgh, Pa.; Mrs.
Katie Rockenstein, lives at Freedom, Pa.; and William, lives at Canton, Ohio.
Jerry Shontz attended the public schools of Harmony, Butler County, Pa., and was 17 years old when his family removed
to Columbiana. He learned the carriage making trade which he followed about eight years, and in 1896 he established
his present business. His son, C. H. Shontz, has been a partner in the business since 1916, which is known as Shontz
& Son. They are leading grocers of this section of the county and deal in high grade groceries, meats, and
Mr. Shontz married Miss Myrtle Buzard, of Columbiana, Ohio, and they have six children as follows: W. B., lives
in El Paso, Texas, Ethel, at home; C. H., a sketch of whom appears below; Olive, married Dr. Harry L. Weaver, lives
at Alliance, Ohio; Bertha, at home; and Irma, deceased.
Mr. Shontz is a Republican and has served as a member of the school board and city council. He and his family hold
membership in the Methodist Episcopal Church and he belongs to the Masonic Lodge and Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
He and his family have a wide acquaintance throughout Columbiana County.
