John G. Ryan, an enterprising business man of Columbiana and substantial citizen of Columbiana County, is a
native of Ohio. He was born at Washingtonville, Columbiana County, July 27, 1873, and is the son of J. C. and Emma
J. C. Ryan, deceased, was a prominent attorney of this county for more than 50 years. He was born at Washingtonville,
Ohio, in 1831, and lived there during the greater part of his life. He died in 1918 and his wife, who was born
at Deerfield, Mich., resides in Miami, Fla. Mr. and Mrs. Ryan were the parents of four children, as follows: John
G., the subject of this sketch; Otis, died at the age of 25 years, was a Spanish War veteran; Pearl, married Frank
Miller, lives in Miami, Fla.; and Hazel, married Vade Coons, lives at Paulding, Ohio.
J. G. Ryan was reared and educated at Hicksville and in 1900 removed to Salem, where he engaged in business for
L. Tomlinson. He has lived in Columbiana since 1906 and conducted a farm in Fairfield Township until 1912. He has
since been interested in his present business as proprietor of the local store of the United Cigar Stores. Mr.
Ryan has a fine store and handles a good line of merchandise, including cigars, tobaccos, confectionery, etc. He
also has a complete news stand.
On March 14, 1895, Mr. Ryan was united in marriage with Miss Emma Strohaker, of Fairfield Township, Columbiana
County, the daughter of David and Hannah Strohaker, both deceased. They have a son, J. G., Jr., born Jan. 18, 1902.
He was married June 1, 1925, to Miss Dorothy Webber, of Salem, the daughter of Frank and Emma Webber, residents
Mr. Ryan is a Democrat and his family hold membership in the Grace Reform Church. He has held many township offices
and has always taken an active interest in the affairs of his community.
