Biography of J. P. Neill

J. P. Neill, the capable superintendent of the Columbiana County Infirmary, which is located near Lisbon, is a native of Columbiana County. He was born in Center Township, May 31, 1859, and is the son of William and Harriet (Pennock) Neill.

William Neill, deceased, spent his entire life on a farm. He was a native of Columbiana County and lived in Hanover and Center townships. His wife is also deceased.

J. P. Neill was graduated from Lisbon High School in 1879 and in early life engaged in general farming in Elk Run Township, teaching school during the winter sessions. He later engaged in the retail dairy business near Lisbon, and continued in his teaching profession. Since Sept. 1, 1923, he has served as superintendent of the county infirmary.

Mr. Neill was married first to Miss Effie Barnett, May 19, 1883. She died Aug. 8, 1890, leaving three children: William, deceased; Charles K.; and Jesse. On July 12, 1897, Mr. Neill was married to Mrs. Anna Thorpe, the widow of James Thorpe. By her former marriage Mrs. Neill had two daughters, Olive and Esther. To J. P. and Anna Thorpe Neill were born four children: Mary, Nora, Florence, deceased, and John P., Jr.

Mr. Neill is a Republican and is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge. He is a well known citizen of the community and is held in the highest esteem by every one.

The Columbiana County Infirmary, established in Center Township 3 1/2 miles west of Lisbon, Ohio. It contains 431 acres of well improved land and the buildings are of stone construction, built from stones which were used in the locks of the old canal. The main building is of three story construction, 40 by 100 feet. This contains the sleeping quarters, dining rooms, kitchens, etc. The superintendent's home is located nearby. Mr. Neill raises pure bred stock on the farm and the place is well supplied with fresh vegetables, fruits, etc. At the present time there are 120 inmates of the home.
