James S. McPherson, retired, is a well known and highly esteemed citizen of Columbiana County and a member of
one of the oldest families in this section of the state. He was born on the farm where he lives, Dec. 14, 1851,
the son of Andrew and Nancy (McBane) McPherson.
Andrew McPherson was a native of Madison Township and his wife was born in Yellow Creek Township. Many years ago
they settled on the present McPherson farm in Madison Township, where they spent the remainder of their lives.
Mr. McPherson died May 18, 1890, and his wife died April 28, 1883. They had eight children, as follows: Nancy,
married William Asdell, both deceased; Andrew, was a Civil War veteran, now deceased; Elizabeth, married John Patterson,
both deceased; Evan, lives in Idaho; John and Daniel, both deceased; James S., the subject of this sketch; Mary
Jane, married William Asdell, both deceased; and Alexander, deceased.
James S. McPherson spent his boyhood on the farm, and received his education in the district schools. He operated
the farm with his father until the latter's death and has since been the owner. The farm contains 130 acres and
is among the well improved places of the township. It is located on the Lincoln Highway and since Mr. McPherson's
retirement has been operated by his son, F. C. McPherson.
On July 3, 1890, Mr. McPherson was united in marriage with Miss Nancy McPherson, who was born in Madison Township,
July 8, 1853, the daughter of Malcolm and Margaret (Noble) McPherson, natives of Columbiana County, both now deceased.
To Mr. and Mrs. James S. McPherson two children were born: Margaret, lives at home; and F. C., at home. Mrs. McPherson
died Feb. 16, 1922, and is buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery, Yellow Creek Township.
Mr. McPherson is a Republican and holds membership in the Presbyterian Church.
