John McKeefrey, who lives retired at Leetonia, is a well known and highly esteemed pioneer citizen of Columbiana
County. He was born in Ireland, March 19, 1837, the son of Patrick and Margaret (McClamons) McKeefrey.
Patrick McKeefrey spent his entire life in Ireland and is deceased. His wife died at Leetonia and is buried in
St. Mary's Cemetery. They were the parents of the following children: Margaret, died in early life; John, the subject
of this sketch; Ellen, deceased; Patrick and James, both deceased; and Thomas, deceased.
John McKeefrey was 13 years of age when he came to the United States. He lived in Pittsburgh, where he attended
school and later engaged in the oil business. In 1890 he removed to Leetonia, where he established the McKeefrey
Iron Company in partnership with his son, W. D. McKeefrey. Mr. McKeefrey was identified with the Leetonia Bank
as a director until his retirement.
In 1860 Mr. McKeefrey was united in marriage with Miss Mary A. McFarland, a native of Ireland, now deceased. They
had 13 children: W. D., a sketch of whom appears elsewhere in this history; and Margaret, who lives at Leetonia.
Mr. McKeefrey is a member of the Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He has served as school director
and as a member of the board of health and city council. The McKeefrey family is representative of the best citizenship
of the community.
