Biography of Dr. W. A. McCommon
Columbiana County, OH

Dr. W. A. McCommon, who has practiced his profession at East Palestine for the past 26 years, is among the capable physicians and surgeons of Columbiana County. He was born at Plain Grove, Lawrence County, Pa., Jan. 12, 1869, the son of Robert and Rosanna (Magee) McCommon.

The McCommon family is of Scotch descent and in 1795 settled in Lawrence County, Pa., where Robert McCommon was born. His father homesteaded a tract of 400 acres. Robert McCommon followed general farming and stock raising during his life and died in 1914. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and active in local politics. His wife died in 1916. She had two brothers, John and George Magee, who served during the Civil War. George was killed during the Battle of Bull Run, and John lives retired in Lawrence County, Pa. Mr. and Mrs. McCommon were the parents of the following children: Jennie, marrled George Patterson. both deceased; McWatty, lives retired on the home place in Lawrence County, Pa.; John, deceased, Emma, deceased, was the wife of Henry Scholler; Martha and Annette live in Lawrence County; Blanche, married Floyd McClellan, lives at New Castle, Pa.; George, lives at Shadyside, Ohio; and William A., the subject of this sketch.

Dr. Wm. A. McCommon received his early education in the district school and in 1897 received his degree as Doctor of Medicine at Ohio Medical University. He has been located in East Palestine since 1889, and has a well established practice.

In 1901 Doctor McCommon was united in marriage with Gertrude C. Donaldson of New Galilee, Pa., the daughter of Edwin and Mary (Davis) Donaldson. Mr. Donaldson is deceased and his wife resides at East Palestine. They had three children: Charles, lives at New Castle, Pa.; Byron, a conductor on the Pennsylvania railroad; and Mrs. McCommon. Doctor and Mrs. McCommon have two children: Donald, lives in East Palestine; and Mary, married Robert Wolz, lives at Ambridge, Pa.

Doctor McCommon is identified with the Columbiana County, Ohio, and American Medical Societies, and the American Medical Association. He has served as a member of the school board and has always taken a keen interest in every movement to benefit East Palestine. He and his family are members of the United Presbyterian Church and he belongs to the Masonic Lodge.
