Dr. C. McCandless, well known veterinary surgeon of Lisbon, is a veteran of the World War. He was born in Butler
County, Pa., Nov. 11, 1892, and is the son of J. A. and Sarah (Leyda) McCandless.
J. A. McCandless was born at Prospect, Pa., in 1855. He has engaged in the building business at Ellwood City, Pa.,
for a number of years, where he resides. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Independent Order of Odd
Fellows and the Masonic and Elks lodges. His wife, also a native of Pennsylvania, was born in 1858. Mr. and Mrs.
McCandless have six children, as follows: Byron J., lives at Ellwood City, Pa., where he is an architect; C., the
subject of this sketch; Miles, lives at Ellwood City, Pa., and is in business with his father; Alice, married Joseph
Vosler, lives at Slippery Rock, Pa.; Carlton and Joseph, who are engaged in the building business with their father.
Dr. C. McCandless was eight years of age when his family removed to Ellwood City, Pa., where he attended the public
school. He was later graduated from the University of Chicago and the Chicago Veterinary College. He has practiced
his profession at Lisbon since 1915 and is widely known. During the World War Doctor McCandless enlisted for service
in June, 1918, and served overseas until October, 1919. Until his enlistment he was part owner of the Central Drug
Store, Lisbon. Upon his return he purchased the entire business, which he successfully conducted until 1924, when
he sold a half interest to T. C. Williams. Doctor McCandless has other extensive land holdings in Lisbon, among
them being a fine residence on the Lisbon-Salem Road.
On Oct. 11, 1916, Doctor McCandless was married at Lisbon to Miss Esther Ward, the daughter of L. S. and Anna Ward,
residents of Lisbon. Doctor and Mrs. McCandless have a daughter, Dorothy Jane, born in 1921.
Dr. McCandless is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Ohio State Veterinary Association, The
United States Live Stock Sanitary Association, and is Columbiana County veterinarian. In politics Doctor McCandless
is identified with the Republican party. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Elks Lodge, and is a 32nd
degree Mason and member of the Shrine. He is capable in his work and ranks among the leaders of his profession.
