Biography of Ralph W. Hawley

Ralph W. Hawley, managing editor of the Salem News, is one of the prominent newspaper men of Columbiana County. He was born in Salem, July 10, 1888, and is the son of Warren A. and Minerva (Tomlinson) Hawley.

Warren A. Hawley, a highly esteemed citizen of Salem, was born in Columbiana County, Ohio, and his wife was born in Jefferson County, Ohio. In early life he engaged in farming south of Salem, later was a machinist, and is now engaged in the grocery business. Mr. and Mrs. Hawley have three children: Grace M., marrled E. J. Peek, lives at Redondo Beach, Cal.; Roy K., lives at Akron, Ohio; and Ralph W., the subject of this sketch.

Ralph W. Hawley received his education in the public schools of Salem and began his newspaper career as a reporter for the Salem News, later becoming its editor. After five years in the latter capacity, he engaged in newspaper work on the Paclfic coast, and after his return to Ohio was connected with the Cleveland Plain Dealer. He served as managing editor of the Tribune, East Liverpool, for one year, after which he spent five years with the Youngstown Telegram as telegraph editor, city editor, and assistant managing editor. He returned to Salem in 1921 and purchased an interest in the News, of which he is managing editor.

On July 22, 1918, Mr. Hawley was united in marriage with Miss Lora M. Hill, of East Liverpool, the daughter of Robert E. and Carrie (Brockman) Hill, residents of East Liverpool.

Mr. Hawley holds membership in the Christian Church and his wife is a member of the Methodist Church. He is a Republican, a 32nd degree Mason, and member of the Shrine and belongs to the Elks Lodge, Salem Chamber of Commerce, Salem Golf Club, National Editorial Association, and the American Legion. Mr. Hawley served during the World War in the Field Artillery and was one year in service. He was president of the Salem Rotary Club in 1925 and has been active in Rotary work throughout Ohio, being a charter member and having held the office of first secretary of the local organization.
