Biography of C. E. Gross

C. E. Gross, of Homeworth, is among the prominent and successful business men of Columbiana County. He was born in Knox Township, Nov. 28, 1869, and is a son of John and Mary (Schaeffer) Gross.

John Gross, deceased, was a native of Germany, and the son of John and Fredericka Gross. The Gross family emigrated to the United States at an early date and settled on land in Knox Township, Columbiana County. John Gross engaged in general farming and stock raising and operated 96 acres of land. Mr. and Mrs. Gross, deceased, were the parents of the following children: Matilda, and Christian deceased; Lydia married Isaac Hesstand, both deceased; Jacob, lives in Knox Township; Amanda, married Andrew Yagley, lives at Paris Center, Ohio; C. E., the subject of this sketch; and William, in partnership with C. E. Gross, lives at Homeworth.

C. E. Gross spent his boyhood in Knox Township and engaged in farming with his father until the latter's death. He then established a business at Homeworth, which is known as the Gross Brothers Lumber Company. It is the only business of its kind in this section and they are dealers in hardware and builders supplies. A contracting business is also conducted by Gross Brothers and they employ a large force of carpenters, masons, etc.

Mr. Gross was married on Jan. 19, 1890 to Miss Nancy Catherine Yeagley, of Knox Township, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Yeagley, both deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Gross was born a daughter, Elva Luella, born Jan. 26, 1893. She married Jesse W. Freidley, who lives at Homeworth, where he is connected with Gross Brothers Lumber Company. They have had two children: Glenwood, died in infancy; and Russell, born May 7, 1913.

Mr. Gross is a member of the Presbyterian Church and the Masonic Lodge. He is a Republican and stands high in the esteem of his fellow citizens. He served two terms as township clerk of Knox Township.
