Biography of Calvin L. Glass

Calvin L. Glass, who has been identified with the Deming Company of Salem for the past 33 years, is a member of a prominent pioneer family of Columbiana County. He was born on a farm twelve miles southwest of Salem, Aug. 28, 1874, the son of Frederick and Louisa (Lower) Glass.

Frederick Glass was born in West Township, Columbiana County, where his father, Jacob Glass, had settled many years ago. Until his retirement several years ago, Frederick Glass was a leading farmer and stockman of this section. He resides in Salem. His wife is deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Glass were born the following children: Etta M., married James King, lives in Washington, D. C.; William L., has been connected with the Deming Company, Salem, for 30 years; C. L., the subject of this sketch; Charles F., lives in Washington, D. C.; Alice, married Carl Hoff, lives in Indianapolis, Ind. Frank, died at the age of 37 years, was Ford agent at Salem for a number of years; and Lelah Maude, died at the age of 14 years.

C. L. Glass was reared on his father's farm in West Township and attended the schools of West Township In 1893 he entered the employ of the Deming Company, pump manufacturers, and has remained with that firm most of the time since. Mr. Glass' new home on Ellsworth Avenue is among the finest residences in the city and was built in 1904 by Joseph French.

On Dec. 24, 1895, Mr. Glass was united in marriage with Miss Anna B. McCracken, of Salem, also a member of a pioneer family of Columbiana County, her parents, Herbert and Mary (Silver) McCracken, having settled here in 1850. Two sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Glass: Lloyd Harold, who died of sickness while in service during the World War at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia; and Roth M., a World War veteran, lives in Chicago. He was married first to Miss Ethel M. Switzer, who died less than two months after their marriage. In March, 1923, he married Miss Mary Ball, of Lisbon, Ohio.

C. L. Glass is a Republican and an excellent citizen of Columbiana County.
