Biography of Thomas G. Francis

Thomas G. Francis, of East Palestine, is a representative business man of Columbiana County. He was born in Trumbull County, Ohio, July 21, 1870, a son of Benjamin and Margaret (Morgan) Francis.

Benjamin Francis, who lives retired in East Palestine, was born near Cardiff, Wales in 1846. About 1867 he came to this country and located at Youngstown, Ohio, where he became interested in coal mining. He removed his family to Wadsworth, Ohio, in 1883, and five years later settled at Lisbon. His wife died Nov. 11, 1923. Mr. and Mrs. Francis were the parents of the following children: Thomas G., the subject of this sketch; Edmund, lives at Niles, Ohio; Charlotte, married Edward Edwards, lives at Niles, Ohio; Mary, married Joseph Morgan, lives at Canton, Ohio; and Morgan B., lives at East Palestine.

Thomas G. Francis attended the public schools of Girard, Ohio, and when a boy became interested in the mining business which his father conducted. He attended Canfield Normal School and later studied mining engineering. In 1900 Mr. Francis engaged in the mining business with his brother, Morgan B., and they now rank among the leading clay miners of this section. They operate mines at East Palestine and Darlington, Pa. Mr. Francis is a director of the Clay Products Company of New Brighton, Pa., and is a director of the Union Commercial Bank of East Palestine. He has served as a member of the city council for two terms and as chairman of the finance committee.

In 1890 Mr. Francis was married to Miss Jennie Wood of Cleveland, a daughter of Joseph and Ann Wood. To them were born three children: Joseph Roy, who died March 5, 1915, at the age of 22 years; Margaret Ann, married Charles Labor, lives at East Palestine and they have two children, Robert and Jean Alice; and Benjamin, married Miss Carman Strause and they have a son, Benjamin T. Francis. Mrs. Thomas G. Francis died Aug. 9, 1920, and is buried in East Palestine.

Mr. Francis and his family are members of the Christian Church and he is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge.
