Biography of John E. Eaton
Columbiana County, OH Biographies

John E. Eaton is well and favorably known in Wellsville, where he has been connected with the Pennsylvania Railroad for almost 40 years. He was born in Hancock County, W. Va., in August, 1863, and is the son of Aaron and Catherine (Worstell) Eaton.

Aaron Eaton, deceased, was a veteran of the Civil War and an early settler of Columbiana County. He was a native of West Virginia and his wife was born in Ohio. In 1871 he came to this county and settled at Wellsville, where he was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad. Be was a stanch Republican, a member of the Christian Church, and belonged to the Grand Army of the Republic. He died June 11, 1914, and his wife died in September, 1924. Mr. and Mrs. Eaton were the parents of the following children: Flora, married J. J. Duell, lives in California; Frank, deceased; John E., the subject of this sketch; Nancy, deceased, was the wife of John Ramsey, lives at Wellsville; Boyd, deceased; George, killed in a railroad accident; Mary, married J. F. Merrell, lives in Pennsylvania; and Maylon, deceased.

John E. Eaton spent his boyhood in Wellsville, received his education in the public schools and in 1886 entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad as a car repair man. He held various positions and from 1896 until 1924 was in complete charge of the wrecking crew. He has since worked in the carpenter department. Mr. Eaton owns a well improved farm of 78 acres in Madison Township, Columbiana County.

In June, 1911, Mr. Eaton was united in marriage with Miss Jennie Phillips, of Hammondsville, Ohio. She died in April, 1919, leaving a son, John Emerson, born March 23, 1912. On Dec. 13, 1919, Mr. Eaton was married to Miss Elizabeth Conway, of Portland Station, Ohio, born in 1875, and the daughter of William and Mary Jane (Moore) Conway. Mr. Conway died in March, 1922, and his wife lives at Tiltonsville, Ohio. They were the parents of the following children: Mrs. Eaton; Zenas Martin, deceased; James, lives at Tiltonsville, Ohio; Joseph, lives at Chillicothe, Ohio; Helen, married Benson Higgins, lives at East Liverpool; Charles, lives at Yorkville, Ohio; and Harry, lives at Tiltonsyule, Ohio.

Mr. Eaton is identified with the Repubican party in politics and is a member of the Christian Church. He is highly esteemed and ranks among the reliable men of Columbiana County.
