J. O. Carney, of West Point, is well and favorably known in Columbiana County. He was born at Beaver Falls, Pa., June 22, 1879, and is a son of Joseph and Sarah (Dailey) Carney.

Joseph Carney, deceased, was a veteran of the Civil War. He was born at Beaver Falls, Pa., where he spent his entire life. He served during the Civil War with Company E, First Pennsylvania Cavalry and was wounded in service. He was a Republican, a member of the Methodist Church and the Grand Army of the Republic. Mr. Carney died in 1919. His wife resides at Harmerville, Pa. They were the parents of the following children: Rose, the widow of William O'Brien, lives at Harmerville; Harry and Emma, deceased; Stella, married Julius Potter, a farmer, lives in Beaver County, Pa.; J. O., the subject of this sketch; Sarah, the widow of Mathew New, lives at Harmerville, Pa.; Frank, deceased, was a Spanish American War veteran; and Roy, a farmer, lives in Beaver County, Pa.

J. O. Carney received his education in the schools of Beaver Falls and began his business career as the proprietor of a restaurant at Conway, Pa., which he conducted for 12 years. In 1913 he removed to East Liverpool where he was interested in the motion picture business for several years. He also conducted a confectionery store there. In May, 1924, Mr. Carney purchased his present place of business, a gasoline and oil service station, which is located on the Lincoln Highway at the juncture of the East Liverpool and Wellsville roads. He also handles automobile accessories and conducts a grocery and confectionery business in connection with the former.

On April 27, 1900, Mr. Carney was united in marriage with Miss Mary Friedrich, who was born at New Brighton, Pa., Aug. 20, 1881, the daughter of John and Helena (Water) Friedrich, the former a native of Germany and the latter of Pennsylvania. Mr. and Mrs. Friederich, now deceased, were the parents of the following children: George, deceased; Elizabeth, lives at Beaver Falls, Pa.; Mrs. Carney; John, lives at New Brighton, Pa.; Walter, Beaver Falls, Pa.; Helen, deceased; Lawrence, resides at Beaver Falls, Pa.; Herman, a veteran of the World War, lives at Beaver Falls; and Roy, lives at Beaver Falls.

To Mr. and Mrs. Carney have been born four children: Mary, born Aug. 17, 1902; Joseph, born Feb. 2, 1910; Sarah, born Dec. 16, 1913, and Calvin, born Jan. 16, 1926.

Mr. Carney is a Republican and a member of the Catholic Church. He has an extensive acquaintance in the community and is favorably known.
