W. J. and V. C. Barlow, who are successfully engaged in the grocery business at Lisbon, are substantial citizens
of Columbiana County. They are the sons of Richard and Elizabeth (Underwood) Barlow.
Richard Barlow was born in England in 1832 and when a young man came to this country and settled in Lisbon, where
he was employed in the old wooden mill. In later life he engaged in general farming in Center Township and died
in 1912. His wife, a native of Columbiana County, died in 1918. To Mr. and Mrs. Barlow the following children were
born: Sadie, deceased; Alice, married Frank Riddle, lives at Lisbon; Effie, married H. J. Hollinger, lives at Lisbon;
W. J., associated in the grocery business with his brother in Lisbon; Linnie, married Edward Cassidy, lives at
Mobile, Ala.; and V C, the subject of this sketch. W. J. Barlow attended the district schools of Columbiana County
and was engaged in various occupations until 1907 when with his brother, V. C., they established their store at
135 West Washington Street, Lisbon, Ohio.
W. J. Barlow was married April 4, 1903 to Nora B. Johnson who was born in Elk Run Township, the daughter of John
M. and Anna (Scott) Johnson, natives of Columbiana County. The latter now resides in Elk Run Township. Two children
have been born to Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Barlow: Bernice E., born Feb. 14, 1904, a graduate of Lisbon High School and
Kent State College, is now a teacher in the Lisbon Schools; and Frances, born Nov. 29, 1909 is a graduate of the
Lisbon High School. Mr. Barlow is a member of the Masons, Junior Order of American Mechanics, the Christian Church
and is a Republican.
V. C. Barlow was educated in the public schools of Lisbon and Northeastern Ohio Normal School, which was located
at Canfield, Ohio. He engaged in teaching school in Center Township for four years and in 1907, with his brother,
W. J., established their present business. Barlow Brothers are well known dealers of high grade groceries and meats.
On Aug. 22, 1907, V. C. Barlow was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Williams, of Wayne Township, Columbiana
County, the daughter of Minas and Elizabeth Williams, both deceased. They have a daughter, Janet Elizabeth, born
Nov. 6, 1913.
Politically V. C. Barlow is a Republican. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Masonic Lodge, the Independent
Order of Odd Fellows and Kiwanis Club. The Barlow brothers are public spirited citizens and hold the high regard
of all who know them.
