Thomas L. Allen, retired, is among the substantial and highly esteemed citizens of Wellsville. He was born at
Clarion, Pa., Jaly 20, 1856, and is a son of Thomas and Alice (Hicks) Allen.
Thomas Allen, deceased, spent his entire life in Pennsylvania. He was a carpenter by trade and became a well known
building contractor. Mr. Allen was a Republican and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. His wife is also
deceased. They were the parents of five children: Isaac, deceased, was a Civil War veteran; Sarah, married William
Smith, both deceased; Elizabeth, deceased, was the wife of Joseph Sampson; Caroline, married W. F. Gourley, lives
in Clarion County, Pa.; and Thomas L., the subject of this sketch.
Thomas L. Allen spent his boyhood in Clarion County, Pa., and attended the district schools. In early life he engaged
in farming with his father and in 1887 removed to East Liverpool, where he learned the sheet metal trade. Mr. Allen
was employed in the shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company for 37 years, and has lived retired in Wellsville
since 1922.
On Nov. 15, 1882, Mr. Allen was married to Miss Mary Pittinger, who was born in Hancock County, W. Va., June 24,
1856, the daughter of Nicholas and Elizabeth (Andrews) Pittinger, the former a native of Hancock County, W. Va.,
and the latter of Pennsylvania. Mr. and Mrs. Pittinger were the parents of the following children: Dallas, deceased;
Jerusha, married James Hall, both deceased; Marietta, the widow of Winslow Hood, lives in East Liverpool; Thomas
A., deceased; Mrs. Allen; John, deceased; Frank, lives at Newell, W. Va.; and William, lives in East Liverpool.
To Mr. and Mrs. Allen were born two children: Edwin, born Dec. 20, 1883, a traveling passenger and freight agent
for the Union Pacific Railroad, lives in Cleveland, married Vinnie Grunt, and they have a daughter, Louise Mary;
and Clyde, born Nov. 26, 1899, died June 18, 1900.
Mr. Allen is a Democrat and has served as city councilman. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church in which he
is an elder.
