HUGH M. HILL, justice of the peace, Spencerville, was born in Harrisburg, Penn., January 18. 1835, son of John
G. and Ellen (MeCormic) Hill, natives of Pennsylvania, parents of six children, of whom Hugh M. is the eldest.
Early in life he learned the tailor trade, which he followed about three years, but retired on account of his health,
ana became a clerk in a dry goods store. In 1853 he came to Spencerville, and clerked two years, then spent a year
in the West. tpon his return he embarked in the lumbering industry, hut eventually returned to clerking. Later
he took charge of the tnion Mills one year. Mr. Hill was married, December 9, 1858, to Ellen M. Harter, who was
born in Marion County, Ohio, January 12, 1840, daughter of John L. and Annie Harter, early settlers of this county.
In 1864 Mr. Hill enlisted in Company G, Forty seventh Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and remained in the service until
the close of the war. He is an active member of Fair Post, G. A. B., and has been a member of Arcadia Lodge, F.
& A. M., about twentyfive years; has served the people of the township in several offices of trust, and is
now in his fourth term as justice of the peace. His political sympathy is with the Democratic party. During his
business career he has engaged in several branches of trade, but now devotes his time to the duties of his office
and insurance. He takes an active part in public enterprises, especially those for the advancement of educational
privileges, and has served on the school board.
