R. F. CAHILL, grocer, Bluffton, was born in Cumberland County, Penn., December 2, 1831; son of Richard and Sarah
(Foulk) Cahill, the former born in Maryland, and of Irish descent, the latter a native of the Keystone State, of
German lineage. His father, a physician, came to Ohio, where he followed his profession for many years, and in
1858 settled in Bluffton, same State. and here practiced. Our subject, the third in a family of seven children,
received a common school education in Wayne County. His 6rst business enterprise was buying and shipping live stock.
On coming to this county he entered into partnership with H. Waltz. who is now in the commission business in Buffalo.
N. Y. After the dissolution of this partnership Mr. Cahill continued in the stock business alone until 1876, when
he embarked in the grocery business, which he has carried on with more than average success ever since. He enWioys
four clerks and enjoys a good trade. Mr. Cahill was married, in 1859, to Miss Carrie Alexander, a native of Ohio,
and a daughter of Rev. John Alexander, a pioneer minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and who was also a
politician, a Democrat, and who at an early day served as county recorder of Allen County. Mr. and Mrs. Cahill
have two children: Lulu B. and Harry Lee. who is clerk in the store when not attending school. Mr. Cahill went
to California in 1850, returned in 1851, but the same year went back to the gold fields of that State, where he
remained for about two years. In politics he is a Democrat.
