HANKS P. GAGE.
I was born, of honest and honorable parents, in the State of Vermont, in April, 1821. My parents moved to Ohio
in 1828, and died early in life, leaving six children to scratch gravel or starve, the eldest of which was sixteen,
and ranging down to six years of age, myself being second on the list. I have rooted my way, until I have the honor
of being Senator of the great State of Ohio, from the Thirty third District; and, while I am possessed of this
distinguished honor, I am free to confess myself much better fitted to conduct a dry goods trade, or onehorse banking
business, up in Hancock county, than I am to make laws for the people of this noble State.
As to history, I have none, save that common to boys in this country, who are left to work their way up, or down,
as they may elect, or circumstance may render.
