Wheeler, Philip, jr., was born in Jerusalem, N. Y., March 5, 1845, and is the oldest son in a family of six
children of Philip and Maria (Van Gelder) Wheeler. His father was a native of Columbia County, N. Y., his mother
was a native of Sullivan County, N. Y., and his other children were Charles, who died aged nineteen; Mary, wife
of Earl Allen, of Gilmore, N. Y.; Jane, wife of Frank Dickens, of Dalton, N. Y.; George, a resident of Jerusalem;
and Gertrude, wife of George H. Masher, of Oakland, N. Y. Mr. Wheeler received only a common school education and
at the age of fifteen years was apprenticed to learn the trade of carpenter. He has during his life followed that
trade in connection with contracting for buildings He married Sarah M., daughter of Henry and Emily (Tyler) Walker.
They have two children, viz.: Charles Henry, a graduate of Syracuse University, and Nellie F. In politics a Republican,
he has served as highway commissioner for a number of terms.
