Le Van Bender, Joseph, born near Philadelphia, Pa., August 23, 1849, was reared on a farm and at the age of
sixteen commenced work in a store. In 1861 he enlisted in Company B, Fifty second Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers,
and after a brief service was discharged, with the rank of second lieutenant. He re enlisted and served as first
lieutenant of Company D, One Hundred and Sixty eighth Pennsylvania Volunteers, till the close of the war. Having
studied medicine before entering the service, he now completed his course and practiced several years in Wyoming
County, before coining to Penn Yang. His medical education was acquired in Baltimore, Buffalo and New York City,
and his practice is after the eclectic school.
