Van Tassel, Philip, was born in the town of Austerlitz, Columbia county, May 27, 1820, and at the age of seven
years was thrown on his own resources. He followed farming ten years, and was a hotel keeper for the same period,
also following droving and speculating several years. October 14, 1839, he married Catharine Messenger, of Washington,
Mass., by whom he had six sons: William H., George W., Thomas M., John E., Francis and Philip. William H. was elected
sheriff of Columbia county; George W. was killed by a horse falling on him. Thomas M. died young. John E. resides
in Sullivan county. Francis married Cora Wood, and lives in Newark. Philip married Flora Pillottson, who died,
leaving four children. He resides on the home farm. This family came to reside in this town in 1865, and Mr. Van
Tassel retired from active business in 1888, and has since resided in the village. William, father of our subject,
was born in Hillsdale, Columbia county, in 1788, and married Catharine Holsapple, of his native place, by whom
be had seven childien: Maria, Martin, Frederick, William, Philip, Harriet, and Sarah. Mr. Van Tassel died in 1834,
and his wife in 1883. Mr. and Mrs. Van Tassel are members of the M. E. Church, of which he is steward.
