Allen, Joseph, a native of Mansfield, Conn., born June 19, 1820, came with his parents to Oneida county the
same year, and to Newark, Wayne county in 1839. Two years later he removed to Palmyra, and entered the machine
shop of Eldridge Williams. In 1842 he began the manufacture of scales here, and in 1844 manufactured the Fairbanks
scales comprising all the different styles. In 1855 he commenced selling dry goods and groceries, at the same time
continuing the manufacture of scales and agricultural implements, having a general store, and this he has followed
for the past thirty years. He has a large store, fifty six feet front and 110 feet deep, comprising two and a half
stories.
