HENRY G. MERRIAM, son of Henry and Ann E. (Reeve) Merriam, was born March 5, 1836, at Goshen, Orange county,
N. Y. He prepared for college at Farmer's Hall academy at Goshen, and entered Brown university (Providence, R.
I.,) 1854. He was principal of Leicester (Mass.) academy from 1861 to 1865. In 1865 he came to Waverly and opened
a hardware and iron store, which he conducted until 1890. In 1873 Mr. Merriam was elected secretary and treasurer
of the Gas Light Co., of Waverly, and held those offices until he was elected president and treasurer of the same
corporation in 1890. Mr. Merriam was for eleven years a member of the school board of Waverly, and was its first
president. In January, 1867 he married with Fannie White Cummings, daughter of Estes Cummings, of Worcester, Mass.
They have two children, Henry E. Merriam, M. D., of Owego, and Grace M. (Mrs. William A. Stevenson), of Sayre,
Pa. A republican, Mr. Merriam takes an active part in politics. His great grandfather, Benjamin Tusten, M. D.,
was both a colonel in the American army of the revolution and a surgeon in its service.
