GEORGE F. TURPIT. GEORGE F. TURPIT, clerk and postmaster of Malta, N. Y., was born in the town of Malta, May 21, 1872, and is
a son of John J. Turpit. George F. was educated in the district schools of Malta and Round Lake and in the fall
of 1892 took a course in the Albany Business College. Subsequently he entered the employ of Seich & Turpit
at Round Lake, where he remained until January, 1896, when he engaged in the general merchandising business at
Malta. In January, 1896; he was appointed to the office of town clerk to fill vacancy and elected to that office
in March of the same year, and re-elected in 1898. Although a Republican in politics, he was appointed postmaster
at Malta by President Cleveland, in September, 1896, and is still an incumbent of that office. He is recognized
as one of the most enterprising young business men of his section and is held in high esteem. May 20, 1896, he
married Libbie, daughter of George and Katie (Allen) Gildersleeve, of Malta. Mr. and Mrs. Turpit are members of
the Presbyterian church.
