LOUIS MORIS JOHNSTON comes of an old New York family. He was born in New York city in 1839, and passed the early years of his life there. His father, Francis U. Johnstone, M. D. was a prominent physician of that city, who died in D., Mr. Johnstone was in South. America at the beginning of the Rebellion, but returned to the United States in October 1863, and served as 1st Lieu. of Battery I, Independent Penn., Light Artillery, (commonly known in the Army of the Potomac as Nevin's Batter); from January 12th, 1864, to the close of the wan

In 1879, Mr. Johnstone left New York and came to Staten Island to be near his brother, the late Dr. F. U. Johnstone, of New Brighton. In May 1886, he moved into the third ward, the "Hill district' of the village of Edgewater, and in June of the same year, was elected trustee from that ward, was reelected in June 1888, '90 and '90, and has held the position of president of the village without opposition since June 1887.

He has been assiduous in the discharge of his official duties, and his retention in office seems to prove that he has won the confidence of his fellow citizens.
