Thompson, John, was born in the North of Ireland (Londonderry), December 18, 1843. He was a son of William and
Margaret Thompson, he born in Scotland and she in Ireland; he died in Ireland and his wife died in Greenbush. Mr.
Thompson was reared and educated in Ireland, and at the age of fourteen years was copyist in an attorney's office.
At the age of seventeen he came to Albany and began to work for the National Express Company and was with them
for two years. He then began to work for the New York Central Railroad and was with them. until 1866; since then
he has been with the B. & A. and has been train dispatcher from 1872 until the present. Mr. Thompson is a member
of Greenbush Lodge No. 337, F. & A. M., and also of Chapter No. 274, R. A. M., and assisted in the organization
of that chapter. In 1868 Mr. Thompson was married to Margaret Potts of Tyrone, Ireland, by whom nine children have
been born: Martha J., Sarah, John C., Margaret, Jessie, Josiah B., Mary A. and Augusta; one died unnamed. Mrs.
Thompson died February 22, 1894.
