Hanlon, James Ardell and Edward, were born in Lockport, N. Y., the former on November 16, 1841, and the latter
on March 6, 1845. When James was four years old their parents moved to Medina. His early life was spent at farming,
attending the district school during the winter months. The most of his education was acquired at the Medina Academy
under the principalship of Professor Butts. At the age of twenty one be left school and was employed by the hardware
firm of Whedon & Allen. After six years, as a result of his industrious habits, he was received into the firm
as junior partner. His brother Edward, at the same time, was employed as clerk in this establishment. This firm
continued seven years. In 1876 James withdrew, and the brothers formed a new partnership under the name of Hanlon
Bros., which exists at the present time. They occupy more floor room than any other hardware house between Buffalo
and Rochester. Mr. Edward Ranlon has devoted himself closely to the business, and to his keen eye and unusual talent
as a salesman are due much of the success which this firm has achieved. They deal extensively in hardware, tinware,
agricultural implements, buggies, lumber wagons, bicycles, sewing machines and all concomitants of the business.
Messrs. Hanlon Bros. can count many friends among the citizens of Medina, and they have earned the respect and
friendship which they now enjoy.
